The road to the Battle Bowl XVII championship continues with an intriguing Sweet 16 matchup as the #5 seeded Royal Flush squares off against the #12 seeded Carolina Swag. While the seeds may suggest Royal Flush has the edge, Carolina Swag has spent the entire season proving that teamwork and belief can overcome experience.
For Royal Flush owner Robert Calabrese, winning isn’t just the goal—it’s the expectation.
A two-time Season Tour district champion (2021-22 and 2025-26), Royal Flush has become one of the UBA’s most consistent franchises. Calabrese described this season’s path to Battle Bowl as one that came together “pretty easily,” crediting a roster built on chemistry rather than individual stars.
“Our biggest strength is chemistry and no ‘ME’ bowlers,” Calabrese said. “Everybody contributes.”
Royal Flush will rely on standout scratch bowlers Zac Gentile and Mike Cantante, along with handicap bowlers Ed Brady and Matt Atria, to lead the charge. But despite the talented lineup, Calabrese believes the team’s greatest asset is its willingness to win together.
His expectations are simple.
“Only one expectation—and that’s to win it.”
Standing across the lanes will be a Carolina Swag team that’s embracing the underdog role.
Owner Bradley Kurth says his franchise has taken a steady approach throughout the season, relying on family, friendship, and trust to reach Battle Bowl.
“Our journey has been calm and steady,” Kurth said. “We’ve battled together all year to get to this point.”
Unlike many playoff teams that lean heavily on a few stars, Carolina Swag prides itself on having no single player above the team.
“The whole team is who you should watch,” Kurth explained. “We have a great group of scratch and handicap bowlers. No one man on our team is above anyone else.”
That selfless mentality has become the identity of Carolina Swag.
“Our chemistry and bowling for each other—doing whatever it takes to help the team win—is our biggest strength.”
Despite entering as the #12 seed, Carolina Swag isn’t making the trip to Battle Bowl just to participate.
“To win it all,” Kurth said. “That’s why we’re here. That’s been the goal from the start of the year.”
Royal Flush enters with championship experience and a proven track record of success. Carolina Swag counters with a close-knit team that’s played for one another from day one. One team has been here before. The other is looking to announce itself on the biggest stage.
In Battle Bowl, seeding only gets you into the bracket. Once the lights come on, every frame matters.
