On paper, this matchup pits the tournament’s top overall seed against the final team to punch its ticket into Battle Bowl XVII. But anyone who’s followed the Underground Bowling Association knows that once the lights come on and the first ball is thrown, seeding becomes nothing more than a number.
For Impact, expectations are nothing new. They arrive at Battle Bowl XVII as the No. 1 seed after another dominant campaign, extending one of the most consistent runs in UBA history. In eight seasons as a franchise, they’ve reached the playoffs every year, captured five consecutive district championships, earned multiple season ranking titles, and advanced to the Sweet 16 three different times. They’ve also entered Battle Bowl as the No. 1 seed each of the last two seasons.
Yet despite all of that success, there’s one prize still driving this franchise.
The Wilder Cup.
President Rusty Crawford made it clear that this season’s mission has been about earning every opportunity.
“Nothing was handed to us. We battled through one of the tougher brackets and earned every step of the journey.”
While Impact may not feature any current World Championship Series titleholders, don’t mistake that for a lack of star power. Their roster is filled with former Heavyweight, Vixen, Capped Tag Team, and Uncapped Tag Team champions who understand exactly what it takes to perform on bowling’s biggest stage.
Still, Crawford insists the team’s biggest strength isn’t individual talent.
“Our chemistry, heart, energy, and relentless drive,” he explained. “We compete for each other—and for Chuckie Hood (R.I.P.)—every frame.”
When asked who fans should watch during Battle Bowl, his answer spoke volumes about the culture they’ve built.
“There isn’t just one. The team is the player to watch.”
Across the bracket stands a franchise embracing the role of underdog.
X-It Woundz enters as the No. 16 seed, but Captain Darius Mayes believes this team has already proven it belongs. Their road to Battle Bowl wasn’t easy. They survived a gauntlet of opponents familiar with the demanding Laurel conditions, battled back after falling behind in multiple matches, and never stopped believing.
“Tough doesn’t even begin to describe it,” Mayes said. “We were down after Game 1 in all three playoff matches, but we found a way.”
That resilience has become the identity of X-It Woundz.
Without any current WCS champions or district titles to lean on, they’ve built their success through teamwork, determination, and an unwavering belief that someone different will step up every match.
“You never know who’s going to be the key,” Mayes said. “It changes every match, but we find a way to get it done.”
That next-man-up mentality has fueled one of the tournament’s most inspiring playoff runs and earned them a chance to challenge the tournament favorite.
Mayes isn’t coming to Battle Bowl simply to participate.
“Chip or bust.”
It’s a bold statement from a team that has embraced the wildcard label throughout the season.
Perhaps the most intriguing storyline is the contrast in experience. Impact carries years of championship expectations and the pressure that comes with being the No. 1 seed. X-It Woundz carries the freedom of having nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Impact believes its championship culture and unmatched chemistry will carry it to the Wilder Cup.
X-It Woundz believes its resilience can produce one more upset.
One franchise is chasing history.
The other is trying to make it.
Battle Bowl has always been a place where reputations are tested and Cinderella stories are born. Whether this opening-round matchup follows the script or delivers the tournament’s first major shock will be decided one frame at a time.
One thing is certain: when the No. 1 seed and the No. 16 seed take the lanes, neither team will be thinking about the numbers beside their names.
They’ll be thinking about surviving and moving one step closer to the Wilder Cup.
