The road to the Wilder Cup is officially down to sixteen, and one of the most intriguing opening-round matchups at Battle Bowl XVII features the #2 seeded Hostile Takeover taking on the #15 seeded Derty Diablos. While the seeds may suggest a favorite, both franchises arrive in Battle Bowl fueled by the same mindset—bring a championship home.
For Hostile Takeover, this season has already become one for the history books. In just their inaugural year as a franchise, they dominated the Virginia District, capturing first place by an impressive 84-point margin and proving they belonged among the nation’s elite. Owner Dominic Shorter described the journey to the Sweet 16 as a “dog fight” from start to finish, noting that few believed a Virginia franchise would make this kind of run.
What separates Hostile Takeover is their team-first mentality. Shorter believes the franchise’s greatest weapon isn’t simply talent—it’s chemistry. Every bowler shares the same mission and embraces the philosophy of winning by any means necessary. That unity has carried them through a grueling district schedule and into one of the most prestigious events in the UBA.
The roster is loaded with players capable of changing the momentum of a match. Jonathan Gary, Joshua Garner, Mathew Woodall, Nathan Pierce, Logan Dalbol, Paul Tranbarger, Justin Crawley, James Coaxum, Alexander Seng, Derrick Yearby, and Angie Banks provide tremendous depth. Even after losing reigning Heavyweight Champion Geoffrey Griffin’s title during the playoffs, Hostile Takeover never lost confidence. Instead, they rallied around each other and continued proving that no individual is bigger than the team.
Standing across the lanes will be a battle-tested Derty Diablos franchise led by owner Rick Romo. The Diablos know what it takes to win, having already captured a district championship in franchise history. Their path back to Battle Bowl wasn’t easy, however. Romo described the season simply as “challenging,” but those challenges have only strengthened the team’s resolve.
The Derty Diablos aren’t coming to Battle Bowl satisfied with simply qualifying. Their biggest strength, according to Romo, is hunger. With standout players Tyler McLearn, JD Rodriguez, and William Jewel leading the charge, Derty Diablos believe they have the talent and experience to make another memorable postseason run.
Their expectations couldn’t be clearer: win the Wilder Cup and bring the championship back to Texas.
Both franchises also arrive with tremendous support behind them. Shorter thanked the entire Virginia District and Hostile Takeover’s fan base for believing in the team from day one, while also giving credit to DC Mafia for an unforgettable playoff battle. Romo expressed appreciation to everyone who has helped build the Derty Diablos, including David Villalobos, Louie Servin, and the loyal supporters who have stood behind the franchise throughout the season.
On paper, Hostile Takeover enters as the higher seed with remarkable momentum from an incredible first season. But postseason bowling has never been played on paper. The Derty Diablos have experience, confidence, and enough firepower to make life difficult for anyone in the bracket.
When these two hungry teams take the lanes at Battle Bowl XVII, expect intensity from the opening frame to the final shot. One franchise is looking to continue a dream inaugural season. The other wants to remind everyone that determination can overcome any seed.
Only one will move one step closer to the $50,000 Wilder Cup Championship.
